Join AMFP Virginia for a panel discussion/site tour of the new Central State Hospital in Petersburg, VA.

The new Central State Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility designed to replace the aging structures of the existing hospital. This project reflects Virginia's commitment to delivering high-quality, recovery-based treatment in behavioral health by emphasizing safety, flexibility, and healing with dignity. The new hospital will cover approximately 461,000 square feet and provide 252 in-patient beds, including 111 maximum security beds and 141 civil beds. This facility serves as the only maximum security forensic behavioral health treatment program in Virginia.

Key Project Stakeholders

  • DGS: Owner of this state-of-the-art facility
  • Gilbane Building Company: Serving as the construction manager, Gilbane is overseeing the entire project. They are responsible for ensuring the facility meets all design and safety standards
  • EYP/Page: Providing architectural services, EYP is responsible for the innovative design that emphasizes safety, flexibility, and dignity

Impact on Future Patients

The new Central State Hospital is designed to significantly improve the quality of care for patients. Key features include:

  • Modern Facilities: The hospital will offer specialized treatment areas for both maximum security and civil patients, ensuring that each patient receives the appropriate level of care
  • Integrated Services: The facility will include a shared clinic with dental, exam rooms, x-ray, radiology, phlebotomy, and physical therapy services
  • Enhanced Safety and Security: With an integrated security, safety, and information technology system, the hospital will provide a secure environment for both patients and staff
  • Therapeutic Environment: The design includes secure enclosed courtyards for outdoor recreation, promoting wellness and recovery

The new Central State Hospital is expected to open a new chapter in behavioral health treatment in Virginia, offering a modern, secure, and therapeutic environment for its patients.
